I've had my VX-8DR for about 2years now, and I love it! It has awesome features and when good programming software you can share repeater settings easily by emailing the data file to a friend and importing it. I got the external mic, which is about the best I've ever used! AND, I got the GPS antenna add-on. While the radio mount for it is rather bulky, putting the GPS antenna on the external handheld mic is almost transparent! And when it's connected, your APRS works great!

While this is not proper Ham protocol, you can also clip the limited chip in the unit and open it up to be able to transmit as well as receive on all of the bands it has at it's disposal, making it a great survival tool, should you ever have to use those channels/frequencies.

I love mine, and after I get my wife to take her Ham exam, she'll get one too!
