• Layia platyglossa is commonly known as Tidy Tips. They are charming little annuals that are daisy-like in appearance. They are golden yellow with a tidy little white tip on the end of each petal. They are wild flowers native to California, and they grow quickly and easily from seed. Tidy tips in a 12 inch tall annual grow in USDA zones 3 - 10. They look wonderful in containers or growing along the front of the flower border. Tidy Tips have a long bloom season, and they make excellent cut flowers. Start Tidy Tips seed outdoors in the spring as soon as the ground can be worked. Prepare a loosened and weed-free seedbed. The seed should be covered 1/16 inch deep with soil. Sowing Rate: 3 ounces per 1,000 square feet or 9 pounds per acre. Keep the seed moist until germination occurs. With a temperature range of 70 – 75F, germination is usually within 30 days. Grow Tidy Tips in full sun and in rich, well-drained soil. Tidy Tips will often reseed for next year’s display.
