Just what is this intangible, invisible, yet very much a part-of-our-lives thing we call sound? To the phonetist it is the end product of a number of elements in combination - timbre, pitch, duration, rhythm and intensity. To the musician it is the fruition of the delicate tone of the violins, the percussion of the drums and the vibrant resonance of the brass. But, what is sound to you? If you were a baby and could reply, you might say that it is the sweet, tender voice of your mother. If you are a politician, you may say that it is the roar of the crowd, the booing of the malcontents, the applause of the satisfied. A preacher may say that it is the harmonious voice of his congregation, or the sweet amen at the end of a biblical verse or a hymn. Most of us will probably agree that it is all of these things and much more.
