• Excerpt from Astronomical Observations Made at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, Vol. 2: For the Year 1836TI - IE Royal Observatory at Edinburgh is situate on the Calton Hill, in the north-eastern quarter of the city. From the astronomical observations which are detailed in Volume I, its Latitude has been found to be 55° 57' North, and Longitude 0h 12m of time, or 3° 10' 46 5 of space West of the meridian of Greenwich. From a levelling performed several years ago by james J ardine, Esq. Civil Engineer, and a series of Observations Of the tides in the vicinity of Leith, made for the period of two months under his superintendence, he found, that the upper surface of the square plinth of the base of the central column of the Observatory, on which the Altitude and Azimuth Circle is placed, is 34916 feet above the mean level Of the sea in the Frith of Forth at Leith. The floor Of the Observatory is 9 inches lower than the surface of the plinth.The principal apartment in the Observatory is that in which the Transit Telescope and Mural Circle are placed. It is 44 feet in length from east to west. 22 feet in breadth from north to south. and 11 feet in height. but over each Instrument the ridge of the sloping roof is 18 feet above the floor.
