London and St. Paul's from the River._ St. Paul's Cathedral is the most conspicuous building in the Metropolis and is also the largest Protestant Church in the world. It was built by Sir Christopher Wren to replace the one which was totally destroyed in the great fire of London. The top of the gilded cross is 404 feet from the pavement below. The Thames Embankment does not at present extend below Black_ friars Bridge ; consequently this part of the river bank is yet covered with wharfs and warehouses.
