Pride of Barbados, Caesalpinia pulcherrima (a member of the pea family (Fabaceae). AKA: Barbados Flower fence, Peacock Flower, Mexican Bird of Paradise, Dwarf Flamboyan, Caesalpinia, and Dwarf Poinciana. The seeds are mixed and you cannot tell them apart. There will be both yellow and red flowered varieites in the pack. Evergreen shrub or small tree in frost-free climates, a deciduous shrub in zone 9, and a returning perennial in zone 8. In the tropics it gets 15-20′ tall with wide spreading branches that can cover about the same width if not kept trimmed. The cultivation of Pride of Barbados is usually a semi-dwarfed hardy perennial shrub to a typical size of 5-8 feet tall and growing that large even after freezing to the ground the previous winter. Perfect for a natural screen. Grows well in sandy, well drained soil and hot climates. Full sun to part shade. Butterflies love it! Vibrant colors. The seeds are mixed, you will get some of each red and yellow, but will not be able to tell them apart until they bloom. Hardy zone 9 and warmer. Seeds need heat and light to germinate. Trunk of this plant has thorns. Takes well to trimming.
