Not illustrated. 1859 edition. Excerpt: ... following resolutions, prepared by Rev. E. Douglas, of Oldtown, were read by Hon. N. Smith, of Calais, and adopted by the Convention,--as follows: In view of the great importance of Sabbath Schools, in its relation to the Church, and our adult population, therefore Resolved, That this Convention respectfully suggest that the ministers of the gospel of this State preach, on some Sabbath within the next three months, upon the following theme:--"The Duty of Church Members and Adults to connect themselves with the Sabbath School" Resolved, That this Contention recommend to all the Churches of this State, that upon the Sabbath (either in the afternoon or evening) upon which a sermon shall be preached on the subject proposed in the foregoing resolution, a public meeting be held for an Of en discussion of the same subject, and that such action be there and then taken to secure a larger attendance of adults and church members at the Sabbath School as shall be thought advisable. Rev. Mr. Douglas, of Oldtown, said: "Notice the theme, church members and adults. From long experience, I have found but one excuse from members of churches,--'I am not qualified for a Teacher.' They are just the very ones who should be scholars. There may be some other reason, as bodily infirmity, why they cannot attend. My view is that all should attend upon the Sabbath School. I would have them in before they can talk, and I would have them continue as long as they continue to attend Church. Every good citizen, with his family, should go to the church and school, because of the good influence upon himself and his boys.
