Its Town-hall.--Corn-markethouse.--Court-house.--Engine-House.--School-House.--Gaol.--Bridges.--Bank.--Public Offices. THE TOWN-HALL. Jl HE Town-hall, or Butter-cross, as it is commonly termed by the lower class of people, is situated in the centre of the town, where several of the streets terminate. It is a building of singular construction, and was erected in the year 1633, by the celebrated architect, John Abel. This fabric, composed of timber and plaister, and adorned with curious grotesque carvings, stands on twelve oak pillars, now sustained on stone pedestals: the brackets and spandrils of the arches above the pillars, and the upper part of the building, display a profusion of carving. Numerous square and angular compartments are formed by the disposition of the beams at the sides and ends of the structure, which also exhibits various shields of arms of those who contributed to defray the expence of raising it, on which which are inscribed the following sentences, viz. on the south side, Vive Deo gratus, toti mumlo tumulatus, crimine mundatus, semper transire paratus. On the east side, Where justice reigns, /here virtue flows. Sat cito, si sat bene. As columns do support the fabric of a building, so noble gentry do subprop the honour of a state. On the north side, Inmemorid, aternd erit Justus. 1633. In the year 1793 the whole fabric underwent a very expensive repair. the weight of the upper part was much lessened. its roofed gables were taken down. the ponderous tile of the country removed, and a covering of thin slate substituted in its stead. and a new and neat railing of cast-iron...
